You don't go to a state school to become a 3D animator. That's what the trade schools are for. Some great ones are SMU Guildhall and Digipen. They are expensive, but you'd be getting an extremely specialized education. The UCI Game Science major has nothing to do with 3D art and design. It's computer science, so you'll be learning the programming aspect of game development.
For a UC, it's usually very easy to get free money for a BA, especially if you're fresh out of high school. The Cal Grant and Pell Grant are amazing. I easily paid a fraction of the bottom line for my BS in CS. Student loans took up the rest and there's nothing wrong with going into debt if it means you're going to make over $50,000 a year when you leave school.
I plan on going to SMU for grad school, it's expensive though so I may not :(
